The Arts of Los Angeles

LA may be known for its celebrities and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but LA has its fair share of creativity and amazing art venues! From art museums to Broadway shows, LA offers it all! As I’ve mentioned before, LA can be rather spread out, so make sure you do some research beforehand based on what type of art experience you want.

Art Museums:  If you are looking to see something truly unique, the Getty Center and Getty Villa are truly something special. These two museums may be affiliated, but they are separately located. The Getty Center overlooks the coastline and LA skyline with unbelievable views.  This collection offers antiquities, paintings, drawings, sculptures, not to mention 19th and 20th century American and European photographs. The Getty Villa, centered in Malibu, is dedicated to the study of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria – which explains its romantic gardens! The best part of visiting the Getty is that they are free, which is not typical for LA! Just ensure you make your reservations prior to your visit.

Broadway:  If you are looking for a more vocal art form, Broadway is the way to go! LA offers some of the most famous shows, such as the Lion King, Evita, and the Book of Mormon, all playing at the very popular Pantages Theater in Hollywood. You won’t be disappointed! You can always pre-purchase your tickets, but if you are planning on winging it, check out stubhub.com or theatermania.com.

Gallery Row:  Last, but certainly not least, is Gallery Row. If you are an art connoisseur or just a die-hard art fan, you must check out this area in Downtown LA. Gallery Row offers galleries, museums, public art, theaters, shops and art walks. Be sure to check out their website, www.galleryrow.org, in order to narrow down what you want to check out, since you could probably spend your entire vacation here. However, I will say, if you are in LA on the 2nd Thursday of the month, definitely check out their Art Walk from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. It is an awesome way to mingle with locals and visitors, have complementary refreshments and participate in giveaways.
