Union Market, DC Style

New York is cool, Brooklyn even cooler. One of its most talked-about locations is Union Market, which is considered a neighborhood grocery store with top-of-the-line products. The District of Columbia, not to be undone, opened their version last year, and has continued to evolve into its own.

So far, I’ve attended three events at this location, which ranged from the DC Scoop to Crafty Bastards. All were held in their oversized parking lot turned festival space. However, the real gem is hidden inside, where over 40 artisans display their goods. From Rappahannock Oyster Bar to Righteous Cheese or Salt & Sundry, an award-winning boutique reminiscent of Williams & Sonoma, just hipper.

An impromptu drive-in theatre is present Friday evenings, which brings back a nostalgic feeling of days gone by. An event is usually occurring on any given Sunday, and as you walk into the hustle and bustle of the ‘neighborhood market’ amidst empty warehouses, you’ll have to pinch yourself to remember you’re in DC.

Recently, a pop-up was announced in their larger- than-life event space known as Dock 5, a culmination of art, retailers, and concerts which makes this a mélange of awesomeness! Yet the most exciting aspect has just been released. Angelika Film Center will open its first location in DC at Union Market in 2015. Film, food, fun, and festivals…DC stand up!
