LA’s Express Passes: Travel the City Without the Notorious Traffic

While most major cities have convenient means of getting around, Los Angeles can be rather tricky. The city of LA has a lot to offer, but unfortunately, it is very spread out, which makes it a bit challenging to get from point A to point B. Therefore, the best choice of transportation really depends on where you are and where you want to visit.

The Metro

Fortunately, LA has a subway system, though many people are not familiar or aware of this. Locally, the subway system is known as the “Metro.” The Metro has six different lines that are either accessible via Union Station, located downtown, or are available through numerous transfer points. As each line may take you to various places of interest, the Red, Purple, and Gold lines are the most commonly-used lines, as they will take you to the more popular sites.

The Red and Purple lines will take you to spots like the Grauman’s Chinese Theater, Hollywood and Highland, and Universal Studios. The Gold line will take you to other well-known spots such as the Rose Bowl, Pasadena (an amazing place to dine, bar hop, and/or shop), and Chinatown. The Metro is extremely budget friendly, costing only around $1.50 a ride, and for the most part, operates throughout the day (Saturday and Sundays can be a little more challenging). Be sure to check www.metro.net for times and stops.

The Star Line Tours

Though a little pricier, another great way to enjoy LA is to buy tickets for the Star Line Tours, a.k.a the “hop-on hop-off bus.” Not only does the Star Line take you directly to the major attractions, you also get some context with their narration. I always find the hop-on hop-off buses to be more convenient, as you can focus on enjoying your surroundings with the added bonus of avoiding local traffic. Star Line also takes you to LA’s famous beach cities (Santa Monica, Venice Beach, etc.), which is not currently available via the Metro. You definitely don’t want to miss out on some of the local restaurants, bars, and/or shopping that the various beach cities have to offer.

While the above suggestions are popular ways to travel within LA, you can always rent a car, hail a taxi, and/or take the public bus. Though these options may not be the most budget friendly, (except for the public bus), you have more freedom and flexibility to visit the places you want. However, these options will require some patience while sitting in notorious LA traffic.
